Hollister Netflix execs have been teasing us for months about an instant streaming app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Indeed, they’ve been promising it for so long that I’d pretty much forgotten about it. Until now.
Netflix took the wraps off its new app — or, to be more precise, its newly updated iPad app, which is now “universal” for use with the iPhone and iPod Touch — early Thursday, a couple of months after officially announcing the app and just a week before the expected arrival of a spiffy new iPod Touch.
Free for use if you’re a Netflix subscriber (memberships start at $8.99 a month), the app lets you stream more than 20,000 movies and TV shows from Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” library. As with other versions of the Netflix app (available on all three of the big gaming consoles, several HDTVs and Blu-ray players, various set-top boxes, and — of course — the iPad), you can pick up a video from where you left off on another device; browse various movie genres and customized categories; or search for a specific title.
You can also add movies to your “instant” queue,Nike, delete them, or give individual titles a star rating. I’d also been hoping for the ability to manage your DVD queue from the Netflix app, but nope — can’t do it. (There are several third-party iPhone apps that will let you tweak your Netflix DVD queue, though, including the free PhoneFlicks and Flixster apps.)
Movies and TV shows are streamable over the Netflix app via both Wi-Fi and 3G, and for the most part, videos looked smooth and sharp — if pretty small — on my iPhone 4’s Retina display, at least over Wi-Fi. When I switched over to 3G (with four out of five bars of AT&T reception), though, the trouble began, with videos pausing every few seconds for buffering.
Then again,Red Monkey, AT&T reception is terrible in my neighborhood, so you may have a better experience depending on your location (and indeed, some early user reviews say they’ve been streaming over 3G with few hiccups). But if you’re signed up for one of AT&T’s capped data plans, keep in mind that streaming video is a quick way to blow through your monthly allotment of 3G data.
Another note: The new Netflix app doesn’t appear to be optimized for fast-app switching under iOS 4, meaning that if you switch to another app midmovie, the Netflix app will restart once you come back to it. At least you’ll pick up your video right where you left off, but expect to wait several seconds for your movie to rebuffer.
Otherwise, pretty nice — and as I mentioned earlier, the newly updated Netflix app arrives just in time for Apple’s “special event” next week, where we’ll probably (“probably” being the key word here) get a new iPod Touch with an improved display — perfect for watching videos — dual cameras, and more.
Meanwhile, what’s the deal with the expected Netflix app for Android? Good question. Something seems to be brewing, based on the help-wanted ads that Netflix has posted for Android developers in the past few months, but for now, the wait continues.

The star called Us from New Orleans on the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina; working with charity the St. Bernard Project, Lutz helped build five houses in seven days for the still-recovering city.
“We were working around the clock at 50 hours at a time in different shifts,” Lutz marveled. “We got it done just in time. We had so many people come out and lend a helping hand. It was so touching. “
He’ll be back in Louisiana when Breaking Dawn begins filming in Baton Rouge. “I’m hoping to truck down and work with the St. Bernard Project [there] as well. Hopefully I’ll be bring some other cast members too.”
Twilight hunk Kellan Lutz holds no illusions about the nature of his stardom. “Producers and studios know what sells,” the impressively fit actor told UsMagazine.com during a Monday phone interview. “It’s nice to be one of the guys that can help sell a movie by taking his shirt off.”
Still, Lutz told Us, “By no means do I want to be a piece of meat for the rest of my career. It’s funny when you get asked to do a talk show, and then they follow it up with requesting you take your shirt off.”

Lutz, 25, recently topped Men’s Health magazine’s inaugural list of Best Summer Bodies — beating out such six-packed studs as Matthew McConaughey, Twilight costar Taylor Lautner, Zac Efron and others.
Lutz’s girlfriend AnnaLynne McCord first introduced him to the St. Bernard Project. “She really educated me on the need down there,” Lutz told Us. “You don’t really grasp what is going on unless you are down there experiencing it.” (He also recently shot a romantic comedy,Iceberg, Love Wedding Marriage, with Mandy Moore, in the area.)
Cast members like…Robert Pattinson? “It would be a great surprise for everyone,” Lutz said, laughing. “Although I would have to take video of Rob trying to hammer a nail, he might hurt himself.”

Ed Hardy US: What can we expect from you in the future?
DB: When I made my last record it was all in a bubble — in a cellar in Paris — and now I’ve played live and have seen what people connect to, and bring some of that energy in more. I’m going to start writing on the road, which I’ve never done before. It’s kind of fun to be able to come off stage and sit in a bus with my laptop when I have an idea sparked by the show.
Dan Black: Good! I’m in the middle of a tour, so everyday I’m in a whirlwind of things to do. I’m not given much time to think about it. But when I was told, I was confused and pleased, all at the same time. The people I made the clip with are super good friends of mine, so it feels especially good, and they work with me on all my visual stuff. So if I’d made the video with a random director, I’d feel good but less good. But because it’s people I know really well, it’s like a double whammy of good!
US: You just wrapped your All Hearts Tour with Robyn and Kelis. How was that experience?
DB: Amazing! It’s such an unusual mix of people, but I guess there’s a common thread of creating dance-filled crowds. Despite Robyn, Kelis and I coming from really different backgrounds musically, it works amazingly well. We are sold out everywhere. Independent of anything. I’m a massive fan of Kelis and Robyn. So it’s super fun to watch them play every night, let alone share a stage with them and get paid for the same audience. It’s a triple win.

UsMagazine.com: I want to start by saying congratulations on being nominated for two VMA’s for your “Symphonies” video! How are you feeling?
DB: It’s spilt buses. So Robyn and Kelis are slightly higher up the food chain so they have sleeper buses, and out here we are having to drive eight hours to the hotel and then wake up and do more driving. But the pluses way outweigh the minuses.
DB: Not really. I’ve hung more with Robyn. Kelis, in quite a glamorous way, appears and then disappears right after the show. I’ve spoken to her briefly, but now that we’re in New York maybe we’ll have more time to hang. I’ve been spending time with Robyn. She’s from Sweden so we have that whole European thing in common.
DB: He has been around at some of the sound checks, but he has to be kept away from the noise. He’s a very young boy to hear all that!
US: How is it now? Are you getting to know each other?
US: What was your latest idea?
DB: I’m a massive, massive fan of the Neptunes, in particular. And I remember when her first album, Kaleidoscope, came out and Super Thug, it was because of her. This was the late 1990′s and I thought it was a massive game-changing event. And the album came out, and with the stuff she did with O.D.B., I became a super fan. So it is practically surreal and amazing to be on a bill with her. She’s an artist that practically affected me when I was younger.
Dan Black has 2 million YouTube views under his studded belt for his “Symphonies” video (click here to see it), he just finished touring with Robyn and Kelis and he’s even got a celebrated mashup, “HYPNTZ” (mixed with the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella”). Plus, the Brit-bred Parisian just nabbed two MTV Video Music Awards nominations for “Breakthrough Video” and “Best SFX (Special Effects)” for “Symphonies,Louis Vittion,” putting him on par to compete with Eminem and Lady Gaga.
US: Has Kelis’s son, Knight, been on tour?
DB: On stage, I use live looping and each night it’s kind of different, so I thought it would be cool to do that on a whole track.
US: You’ve been inspired by R&B before,Coogi, sampling pieces of Rhianna’s Umbrella and taking inspiration from the Notorious B.I.G. How are you inspired now working with Kelis?

Affliction “Stand Up to Cancer” announced Thursday appearances by other actors, athletes and musicians who have faced the disease, including Maura Tierney, Christina Applegate and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Stand Up to Cancer is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a nonprofit TV and film industry group that supports programs addressing health, education and social issues.

Film and TV producer Laura Ziskin (the “Spider-Man” franchise), a cancer survivor who produced the first telecast, has taken on the job again.
Besides the broadcast networks, Bio,Juicy Couture t-shirts, Discovery Health, E!, G4, HBO, HBO Latino, MLB Network, mun2, Showtime, Smithsonian Channel, The Style Network, TV One and VH1 also will simulcast the event.
“Stand Up to Cancer” will air commercial-free Sept. 10 (8 p.m.-9 p.m. EDT) on the four major broadcast networks,New Era, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, as well as on a number of cable channels. News anchors Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer and Brian Williams are the hosts.
Elizabeth Edwards, who kicked off the first “Stand Up to Cancer” telethon in 2008 with Armstrong, is taking part again.
One of the night’s musical performances will be led by Stevie Wonder and include Natasha Bedingfield, Queen Latifah, Martina McBride, Aaron Neville and Dave Stewart.
Telethon viewers will be asked to make donations by phone or on the Stand Up to Cancer website. All public donations go to cancer research, the group said.
“On Sept. 10, we’ll send a resounding message: We can cure cancer. It’s going to take guts, brains and the ongoing support of the public, but we can do this,” Ziskin said.
The American Association for Cancer Research, the scientific partner of Stand Up to Cancer, administers grants and provides scientific oversight in partnership with a Stand Up to Cancer advisory committee.
LOS ANGELES – Lance Armstrong, Robin Roberts and Michael C. Hall are among the celebrities affected by cancer who will take part in a TV fundraiser next month.
The 2008 event helped deliver more than $100 million for research.
